Four Bills pending with government Calls for critical opinion from Opposition KOCHI: V.R. Krishna Iyer, who heads the Kerala Law Reforms Commission which presented its report to the government in January last, has regretted that the latter has not so far acted on the four laws proposed for the protection of the environment. “Is the Kerala government indifferent to the environment?” Mr. Iyer asked in a press statement. The commission had drafted two new Bills and two amendment Bills: The Kerala Clean Air Bill; the Kerala Environment Courts Bill; the Kerala Preservation of Trees (amendment) Bill and the Kerala protection of River Banks and Regulation of Removal of Sand (Amendment) Bill. “The State government gave no response to either approving or disapproving,” Mr. Iyer said. He saw no reason why the government did not tell the public on the World Environment Day (June 5) that it had with it four Bills recommended by the commission. “I express my unhappiness at the gross neglect of the government towards trees and the Law Reforms Commission, Kerala, Bills,” Mr. Iyer said “It is a pity that there is no public opinion on the subject although the Bills are on the web site,” Mr. Iyer said. “Critical opinion from the Opposition, I hope, will be forthcoming against an indolent government even on important matters,” he said.
