KOCHI: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.’s Kochi Refinery has invested a total of Rs.175 crore in environment care during 2008-09. Four effluent treatment plants located inside the refinery premises take care of the effluent generated and ensure that all the stipulated standards are met before the effluent is let out to Chitrapuzha river. Kochi Refinery maintains three ambient air quality-monitoring stations at three different locations inside the Refinery. As part of the Capacity Expansion and Modernisation Project II, a Sulphur Recovery Unit is being set up at a cost of Rs. 150 crore and an additional effluent treatment plant is being set up at a cost of Rs. 51 crore. A one-tonne-a-day bio-gas plant was commissioned recently to generate bio-gas from the Refinery canteen waste. These measures have seen the BPCL-Kochi Refinery bag, for the third consecutive year, ‘Excellence Award’ from Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB). General Manager (Operations) Tomy Mathews and General Manager (HR) M. P. Govindarajan received the award for Kochi Refinery from Health Minister P. K. Sreemathy at a function in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.
