KOCHI: The district-level programme of distribution of compact fluorescent lamps, jointly organised by the Kerala State Electricity Board and Total Energy Security Mission, in association with the local bodies, was inaugurated by Minister for Forests, Benoy Viswom, at Vengola in Perumbavoor near here on Sunday. It was part of the Statewide programme to replace incandescent lamps in a bid to reduce power consumption. The Minister replaced an incandescent lamp each at two houses, to mark the launch of the programme. Later, at a meeting held at the EMS memorial hall at Vengola, the Minister highlighted the need for energy conservation. Saju Paul, MLA, presided over the function. More than 1.23 lakh CFLs would be distributed in the district. The Perumbavoor circle of KSEB will distribute over 48,000 CFLs while Ernakulam Circle will distribute over 74,000 CFLs. SC/ST families, beneficiary families of rural employment guarantee scheme, fishermen families and the BPL families of local self governing bodies listed under the total energy security mission would be eligible for the free supply of one CFL each. The Minister said the government was extending support to economically vulnerable sections through various measures. Over Rs.180 crores worth housing loans taken by BPL beneficiaries who were unable to repay the amount, would be written off, he said.
