While the chikungunya cases were reported from Kattakada, Vilavoorkal, Poovachal, Vattiyoorkavu and Poonthura, dengue fever cases were reported from Puthukulangara, Pirappancode and Parassala. Three cases of leptospirosis were confirmed in the City Corporation limits and one in Vilavoorkal. A field division of the district medical administration carried out fever survey, door-to-door visits and awareness campaign at Vamanapuram. A press note quoting District Medical Officer N. Sreedhar warned that the resurgence of the monsoon rain was likely to lead to a fresh outbreak of fever, vector-borne diseases like dengue fever, chikungunya and malaria and water-borne diseases like cholera. It directed the public to avoid self-treatment in case of fever and seek medical assistance from a medical practitioner. It also underlined the need to maintain personal hygiene and use only boiled water. As part of efforts to step up disease prevention, the district medical administration will observe a diarrhoeal disease control week from June 8 to 13. Awareness programmes will be organised and oral rehydration therapy corners opened in all health centres.
