Suggests construction of underground tanks Measures aimed at preventing water logging THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Federation of Residents’ Association Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) has asked the government to construct two underground tanks at Thampanoor and East Fort to collect rain water and prevent water logging in these areas during the monsoon. In a statement here on Saturday, the FRAT suggested that the tanks be constructed beneath the Ponnara Park at Thampanoor and the Putharikandam Maidanam or Gandhi Park at East Fort. Drains should be constructed along the road to collect rain water in these tanks. Water collected at the Thampanoor tank can be used to wash rail coaches and buses at the Thampanoor railway station and bus terminal, while water in the East Fort tank can be used to wash buses at the city bus stand at East Fort. When these tanks are filled to capacity, arrangements should be made to pump the excess water to the Killiyar. The statement highlighted the need for alternative arrangements at Statue and Overbridge to divert rain water to the Amayizhanjan canal so as to decrease the volume of rain water flowing to Thampanoor and East Fort. Similar arrangements should also be made to divert rain water from Thycaud, Vazhuthacaud and Mettukada to the Killiyar, FRAT general secretary Rajagopalan Nair said. The FRAT has also suggested increasing the volume of the culvert below the railway line at Thampanoor, installing grills in drains to collect garbage and regular cleaning of storm water drains.
