Western Railway clinches title

CHAMPIONS: The Western Railway women’s team with the trophy.

Chennai: Western Railway claimed the women’s title in the Panimalar-Nellai Friends John memorial volleyball tournament on Saturday when it prevailed over Southern Railway 25-19, 25-21, 18-25, 15-25, 15-13 in the last match of the league at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium.

After losing the first two sets, Southern fought back, thanks to the splendid display by Preeti and Mini. Southern looked well settled at this point of time, but Western managed to regroup and get into a nice rhythm. Profiting from the good work of libero Priya and Shibi, Western raced to a comfortable 14-9 lead. Southern came back strongly to make it 13-14, but Western had the last laugh. Western was richer by Rs. 30,000 and Southern took home Rs. 20,000. While Central Railway finished third for a cash award of Rs. 12,000, Dr.Sivanthi Club pocketed Rs. 10,000 for its fourth place.

Dr. Sivanthi Club beat Alphonsa College (Kerala) 23-25, 13-25, 25-19, 25-22, 16-14.

IOB and VFI Youth team will contest the men’s final on Sunday.

In the semifinals, IOB defeated BPCL 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 while VFI beat Southern Railway 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 25-13.
