Ramesh triumphs

HYDERABAD: Grandmaster R. B. Ramesh clinched the honours with nine points from 11 rounds in the NMDC-sponsored National Blitz chess championship, organised by Cyber Chess Academy at Jubilee Hills International Centre, here late on Friday night.

The event featured 50 players including four Grandmasters and 14 IMs. In all 11 rounds were played in the span of six hours.

Ramesh started the campaign in style scoring six points from as many rounds and in the seventh round, Neelotpal Das of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board, outwitted him to be on par with him and local hero P. D. S. Girinath.

However, with both Neelotpal and Girinath losing their next round games, Ramesh had little difficulty in regaining the title and pick a winner’s purse of Rs. 20,000.

M. R. Lalith Babu of Andhra Pradesh got the better off Neelotpal in a thrilling game to secure the second spot.

Final placings: 1. R.B. Ramesh 9 pts, 2. M.R. Lalit Babu 8.5 pts, 3. Neelotpal Das 8 pts, 4. M.R. Venkatesh 8 pts, 5. Anwesh Upadhyaya 7.5 pts, 6. Parimarjan Negi 7.5 pts, 7. Himanshu Sharma 7 pts, 8. M. Shyam Sunder 7 pts, 9. Ram S. Krishnan 7 pts, 10. B. S. Shivananda 6.5 pts.

Special prizes: Best veteran: V. Koshy. Boys: Under-17: Swayams Mishra (Orissa). Under-14: M. Surya Narayana (AP).

Girls: Under-17: K. Kavya Srishti (AP). Under-14: Y. Pavani Reddy (AP). Best unrated player: G. Pranav (AP).
