THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rain lashed the Malabar region on Saturday, as the second wave of the southwest monsoon swept over Kerala under the pulling influence of a low pressure system over northwest Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department said that an offshore trough had taken shape along the west coast from Karnataka to Kerala, promising fairly widespread rain in the region during the next two days. The low pressure area was on Saturday poised to move east to the Myanmar coast, according to meteorologists. This will weaken the pull the system is exerting on the rain clouds moving over the State from southwest Arabian Sea, thereby weakening the rain activity. The prospects are for the current spell to peter out after two days. Thalasserry received very heavy rainfall of 18 cm during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday. Most areas of Kannur and Wayanad districts received rainfall measuring above 10 cm on the gauge. Centres in the districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta also received good rainfall. Strong onshore winds from the west and southwest, speeds touching the levels of 45 kmph to 55 kmph on occasions, are likely to blow along and off the State’s coast during the next two days. The sea can get rough.
