Disappointing day for the host

FIGHTING IT OUT: SSCB’s Vikash Yadav (left) lands a punch on Govind Solanki of Jharkhand in the lightweight category semifinals on Saturday.

Coimbatore: Internationals Devendro and Vikash Yadav from SSCB scored commanding wins over their opponents and marched into the final of the 42nd National Youth boxing championship at the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya indoor stadium here on Saturday.

Tripura’s Aheibam Bony found the experienced Devendro a tough nut to crack in the light fly (48kgs) class. The young powerhouse from Manipur showed formidable skills and strong legs while finishing Bony 17-8 in four rounds.

Vikash proved his superiority in the light weight (60kgs) category. The 17-year-old from Haryana, who enjoys long distance boxing, kept Jharkand’s Govind Solanki out of reach for most part.

Vikash, who has developed a lot of character over the last couple of months, used the open defence, instead of the much modern shell defence, and invited Govind for the kill. But, the latter, suspecting a trap, chose to stay out of trouble. After wearing down his rival with much success, Vikash went flat out with some stiff jabs and crosses to the head to crush Govind 12-0 at the final bell. It wasn’t however bright for the host as both Ziyaudeen and M. Shanmugam failed to clinch final round berths.

A tired-looking Ziyaudeen went down without a fight to Punjab’s Jagdeep Kumar 10-3 much to the disappointment of the huge holiday crowd. But Shanmugam brought the crowd back to life with some gutsy show at the start.

The Chennai boy moved swiftly and threw a few jabs even as Delhi’s Suraj Tokas tried to cut off the ring.

In the second round, Shanmugam, well conditioned and fresh as ever, let loose a combination of deadly left-rights while Suraj struggled hard to stay in the hunt.

The third round turned out to be pretty unlucky for the young gun from Tamil Nadu. He rapped Suraj with a flurry of punches but the scoring judges thought otherwise and twice pressed the button in favour of the Delhi lad. Call it a costly mistake or inexperience, the damage was done. The crowd did not like it. Even the most experienced technical officials felt sorry for Shanmugam and blamed the system.

Suraj cashed in on the opportunity in the fourth and smartly stayed away to clinch the thriller 8-7.
