Policy note on rural BPOs soon: State IT Minister

N. Anand

CHENNAI: State Information Technology Department will come out with a policy note on setting up rural Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) units on the lines of the existing one at Sanasandiram in Krishnagiri district.

IT Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna will visit the State’s first Rural BPO in Krishnagiri on Monday to learn about the success story and what more can be done to replicate it in the rest of the State.

The Panchayat BPO cum call centre was started by Santhosh Babu, while serving Krishnagiri district as Collector. He had roped in FOSTeRA (Fostering Technologies in Rural Areas) to train school drops out, who have completed Standard X and above, in technical and soft skills to become BPO workers. The other rural BPOs are functioning at Alapatti village, Denkanikottai and Uthangarai.

Replicate model

Talking to The Hindu on Thursday, the IT Minister said that Karnataka was doing well in BPO space including rural BPO and they had very big clientele base. “I will be visiting Krishnagiri on Monday along with the IT and NASSCOM officials to replicate this model throughout the State.”
