Anna University to start Green Brigade

CHENNAI: Anna University has decided to start a Green Brigade to spread awareness of environmental issues and create a greener campus.
Speaking on the occasion of World Environment Day 2009, Vice-Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar said that the Green Brigade could also help to create a plastic-free zone on campus.
“Everyone should get involved. Anyone can join [the Brigade], from the sweepers to the professors or the students,” said College of Engineering, Guindy Dean M.Sekar.
“Everyone has a role to play and can contribute to create awareness.” He said that the Brigade, which could be started under the leadership of some interested faculty, could help to clean up the campus grounds and maintain and improve the campus’ tree cover. “It’s not enough for us to hold international conferences on environmental issues, we need to change the ground realities right here,” he said. Anna University has been reclaiming and reusing the campus wastewater to grow trees, said P. Devadas Manoharan, professor and Estate Officer at the University. However, he felt that more could be done if everyone was conscious of the need to conserve water. Power conservation was another key area, he said, pointing out that the University’s electricity bill was now Rs.25 lakh. In 2000, it had been only Rs.6 to 8 lakh, he said.
