Exclusive teams have been set up to corner criminals, says R. Rajaram The Tiruchi city police have evolved a strategy and put logistics in place to close in on absconding fugitives involved in law and order and crime cases and apprehend those against whom non-bailable warrants are pending. Exclusive teams have been constituted by the police to corner the absconding criminals with 12 special parties mandated with the task of going after law and order criminals and four teams to track property offenders. A vehicle has been provided to each team, which could also count on additional manpower as and when required for their assignment. Members of the teams constitute handpicked police personnel who are fit and have knowledge about the absconding criminals and their activities. Detailed profiles of absconding offenders have been circulated to the teams. Categories of criminalsLaw enforcers say criminals have been categorised as A++, A+, A, B and C depending on the nature of their operations. Those falling under the A++ category and considered “dangerous” are mercenaries and gang leaders, and A+ and A category criminals are hit men. The activities of those classified under the A++ category extend beyond a district. Those under the ‘B’ and ‘C’ categories are the associates of A, A+ and A++ criminals, who provide the former safe haven. Nabbing of ‘B’ and ‘C’ category criminals also helps the police to obtain vital clues about the whereabouts of offenders under A+ and A++ categories, said a senior police official. Authorities say there were over 50 anti-socials classified under different categories who were absconding. The city police say a wanted criminal, Guna, who was nabbed near the city last week by one such team was a prize catch for the law enforcers in their operation against anti-socials. Guna, against whom murder, attempt to murder and kidnap cases had been booked in various police stations, was absconding since October and had been changing his cell phone numbers frequently to evade detection, say police. On specific information, a special police team surrounded him near here and foiled his attempt to escape. Precedence had been accorded to apprehending “priority criminals” and those involved in grave crimes, including murder for gain and robbery cases, besides about 200 persons against whom non-bailable warrants were pending, said a police officer. Besides Guna, categorised as A++ criminal, the city police say they have arrested 29 anti-socials falling under different categories so far.
