Mangoes ripened using chemicals destroyed

PUDUKOTTAI: In a surprise raid on mango wholesale outlets in the town on Friday, the Municipal authorities seized about one tonne of fruits which were ripened artificially using chemicals.
Two-hour raid
The raid, which lasted for about an hour, was conducted on the shops near the New Bus stand, Brindavanam, Panchayat Union office Road; East Main Street and Alankudi Road.
The merchants had arranged the fruits in racks and used calcium carbide for ripening the fruits.
The chemical causes health hazard and the fruits were destroyed, said Municipal Commissioner M. Elangovan who conducted the raid.
This was the second such raid conducted in the town in the last fortnight.
The Commissioner appealed to the fruit vendors not to use any chemicals for ripening and warned them of strict action.
Led by Food Inspector P. Marimuthu, the fruits were destroyed at the Municipality’s compost-yard later.
