Scheme to treat students with defective vision

CHENNAI: A sum of Rs. 5.38 crore has been set apart for a scheme of providing medical treatment to students of government and government-aided middle schools (6th standard to 8th standard) who are affected by defective vision, M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, said on Friday.

A total of 24 lakh students would be covered. Approximately, two lakh students would be given spectacles, he said, adding that initially, the scheme was being implemented in the middle schools.

Mr. Stalin was presenting spectacles to students at a function in the city. On the announcement made in the Budget for 2009-2010, he said the scheme was formally launched on Wednesday.
