Tirupur: The Kongunadu Munnetra Kazhagam (KMK) has decided to temporarily suspend the toddy tapping agitation in the State to facilitate talks with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi planned next week, according to ‘Best’ S. Ramasamy, State president of KMK.
Expert committee
He told reporters here on Friday that the party would request the Chief Minister to appoint one of its representatives too in the expert committee that had been constituted to examine the toddy tapping issue.
“We will continue to stick to our stance for lifting the ban on toddy tapping,” he added.
According to him, permission should be given to tap toddy since it will benefit a large population of coconut growers.
Mr. Ramasamy said that his party planned to constitute a committee comprising representatives of Dyers Association of Tirupur, farming community along the banks of River Noyyal, KMK members and general public, to evolve methods to ensure that the recently installed 20 Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in the Tirupur knitwear cluster become functionable at the earliest.
The plants are yet to start its operations owing to some sub-judice issues.
“We will try to don the role of a mediator to solve the differences between farming community and dyeing units pertaining to operation of CETPs and then ask both the factions to withdraw petitions filed before the courts on the matter for early operation of the plants,” Mr. Ramasamy said.
