UPA government committed to implementing Sethu project, says Vasan

KUMBAKONAM: The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre is very much committed to implementing the Sethusamudram Project which will contribute substantially to country’s economic growth, said G. K.Vasan, Union Minister for Shipping, here on Friday.

He told presspersons that the government is awaiting the Supreme Court’s order on the project and also expecting the report of the Pachuri Committee. Based on the Supreme Court order, the project will be implemented.

Top priority

He also said that port development and modernisation is on top priority in the agenda of the Shipping Ministry. Development of ports was essential and it will contribute to the growth of the nation. Major and minor ports in the country will be modernised.

He said that UPA government is committed to the development of women in the country. He described the election of Meira Kumar as Speaker of the Lok Sabha as historic.

Regarding the Congress party taking part in the State Cabinet, he said that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will take a decision.

Stating that there are nine ministers from Tamil Nadu now in the Union Cabinet, he said “We will work unitedly towards the development of the State and the country.”
