GETTING READY: Holy water being poured on the Kalasam to mark the consecration of Sri Adikumbeshwar temple in Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district on Friday. — NAGAPATTINAM: Mahakumbabishekam of Sri Adhikumbeswaraswamy temple at Kumbakonam was performed on Friday. Thousands of people witnessed the holy event. Gadams were taken in procession from the yagasalas at 7.30 a.m. and holy water was poured over the kalasams of Rajagopurams and Vimana of Sri Adhikumbeswaraswamy at 8 a.m. M. S. Shanmugham, Thanjavur Collector, M. Karunakaran, District Revenue Officer, Balasubramanian, Chairman, City Union Bank, R. Ramanathan, former MLA, Sampath Kumar, Superintendent of police, Srinivasan, Deputy Superintendent of police, witnessed the Kumbabishekam. Legend has it that Kumbakonam was the place where the pot containing amutham landed after Pralaya. Lord Siva himself opened the pot by breaking the neck of the pot and hence the place was called Kudamookku. Later amutham was converted into a Linga and Lord Siva entered into it. The Sivalinga was called Kumbeswaraswamy, the principal deity. Kumbakonam derived its name from the temple. The sprawling temple has three praharas and four gopuras. SecurityPolice made elaborate bandobust arrangements and transport corporation operated special buses to Kumbakonam. A local holiday has been declared for Kumbakonam town to facilitate people to participate in the holy event.
