ON THE MARK: NCC cadets participating in the firing competition at a camp being held at Kumbakonam on Friday. KUMBAKONAM: “Fire!” No sooner did the order come from Navy Commander Mahinder Singh, than the NCC cadets fired at the targets before them at the south zone shooting competition for National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets at Kumbakonam on Friday. The cadets were given five rounds each on a trial basis. They could check their performance by looking at the target after the shots. They could correct themselves. Then they were asked to participate in a competition in which points were given to them depending on the performance. The best performers would be selected to participate in the National level G. V. Mavlankar shooting competition to be held in August. One hundred and fifty six NCC cadets from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala are taking part in the camp. The ten-day camp, which started on June 3, will end on June 12. D. Sweta Bindhu, Junior Under officer of NCC from Andhra Pradesh, said that it was thrilling to participate in the competition. “The training is good and useful. I hope I will make it to G. V. Mavlankar shooting competition at the national level this time,” Bindhu said. According to Lt. Col. Veerasangili, Commanding Officer of 8 (TN) Batallion of NCC located at Kumbakonam, Director General of NCC has asked the 8 (TN) Batallion of NCC located at Kumbakonam to conduct the competitions at Kumbakonam. “Thus this is a proud moment for us. Cadets from south India are participating in this competition,” Lt. Col. Veerasangili said. Commander Singh is the regular training officer. There are two NCC lady officers and four associate NCC officers to assist him. Imported weaponsSpecially imported weapons from Germany are used by the cadets for precision and convenience. The cadets take part in public awareness campaigns also. World Environment Day was celebrated on Friday. “We decided to take only vegetarian food on this World Environment Day,” said Lt. Col. Veerasangili. Eye donation and AIDS awareness camps will also be held for the cadets.
