“Development works are meant to benefit the people, not affect them” TIRUCHI: The Bharathiya Janata Party has urged the district administration to specify the details of the land acquisition for expansion of Tiruchi airport. Referring to the District Collector T. Soundiah’s announcement earlier this week that 430 acres will be acquired and handed over to the Airports Authority of India in six months time and his mention that Pudukkottai bound buses will be diverted via an alternative route in view of the expansion, the party’s State Secretary A. Ilankumar Sambath recalled in a statement the assurance provided by Union Ministers P. Chidambaram and Praful Patel at the time of inauguration of the new airport terminal that the Tiruchi-Pudukottai National Highway will not be closed for the expansion purpose. The Collector’s announcement has created confusion and raised unwanted suspicions. When adequate land was available to the east of the Airport, there was scope to presume that the proposed closure of Tiruchi-Pudukottai Highway indicates an ulterior motive. Development works are meant to benefit the people, and must not affect them, the statement said, citing the instances of expansion of the Madurai and Chennai airports without causing any hindrance to adjacent highways.
