Four marketing parks will come up in a year: Katti

Bangalore: The Government is trying to restore Karnataka’s pride of place in horticultural production, which slipped from first to third postion, Horticultural Minister Umesh Katti said, promising to get four horticultural mega marketing development parks going in a year.

Speaking to presspersons on Saturday after inaugurating the “Mango and Jackfruit Mela” at Lalbagh here, he said work on marketing parks at Kolar, Mysore, Hassan and Belgaum was on at a cost of Rs. 100 crore each, complete with processing units, conference halls and other facilities.

These marketing initiatives were the first of their kind in India, the Minister said, adding that a Delhi-based marketing company was executing the projects. He said that an international marketing park on a 77-acre plot in Devanahalli was also on the anvil, and it would be completed in about three years.

Exhibition at Lalbagh

Lalbagh is hosting an exhibition and sale of different varieties of mango and jackfruit, besides products made from them, ranging from papads to juices. Farmers from various parts of Karnataka are directly selling their produce to customers.

The exhibition also has stalls giving information on the varieties of the two fruits and the methods of cultivation.

While the mango exhibition and sale is on till June 3, the jackfruit exhibition concludes on June 1. The mango sale fair which is going on for the last 10 days in various parts of the city will continue till June 15.

According to Horticulture Department officials, 426 tonnes of mango have already been sold, and the sales are expected to go up to 1,000 tonnes by June 15.
