Ernakulam has launched a unique informal continuous education programme named Navajyothi. KOCHI: Education Minister M.A. Baby will give away the “Akshara Kairali” award, instituted in the name of the mouthpiece of the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority (KSLMA), and release the souvenir to mark the 10th anniversary of the KSLMA at a function to be held at the district panchayat hall at Kakkanad near here on Saturday at 4 p.m. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, P.S. Shyla, district panchayat president, said Ernakulam district will receive the award for adding the most number of subscribers for Akshara Kairali during the 2008-09 financial year. The award for the best individual prerak for adding the most number of subscribers will be given away to K.S. Regimol, the Vytilla block nodal prerak. Ms. Shyla will preside over the function to distribute awards. K. Babu, MLA, will accept the first copy of the souvenir and deliver the keynote address. N. Jayadevan, director of KSLMA, will welcome the gathering and P. Prashanthkumar, district project coordinator of KSLMA, will propose a vote of thanks. Ernakulam district outshone other districts during the 2008-09 fiscal by adding 2,182 subscribers. Ms. Regimol qualified for the award by attracting 208 subscribers on her own for the mouthpiece of KSLMA during the same period. Ms. Shyla said that Akshara Kairali, which was originally launched as a government bulletin, has come a long way. Its content was revised, thus modifying it into the mould of a literary and cultural magazine. The magazine, which had an initial circulation of 4,000 copies and was distributed free of cost, now commands a circulation of 15,000 copies. Ernakulam has launched a unique informal continuous education programme named “Navajyothi,” a course equivalent to Class IV for those with cognitive disabilities, he said. Literary critic M.K. Sanoo will inaugurate a seminar on “Akshara Kairali magazine and continuous education scheme,” to be held ahead of the award distribution at 2 p.m. Writer George Onakkoor will present the topic.
