Cusat for amendment to University Act

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Cochin University of Science and Technology has decided to seek amendment to the University Act and statute, based on a recommendation made by the State Higher Education Council.

A syndicate meet held on Friday nominated Joy Job Kulavelil, member of the syndicate, as the convener of the committee that will come up with proposals for making changes in the Act and statute. K. Mohanachandran, syndicate member, and Godfrey Louiz, Pro Vice-Chancellor, are members of the committee.

According to the draft policy report on the revision of university laws submitted by the Higher Education Council, the overall objective of the exercise is to promote quality and equity in higher education by injecting greater flexibility, efficiency, autonomy and accountability in the administration of higher education institutions.

The laws should enable all higher education institutions to participate in and contribute to regional and national socio-economic development and to inculcate constitutional values of democracy, secularism, diversity and tolerance.

The draft policy said that administration of higher education institutions at all levels should be democratised through a system of participatory management in which teachers, students and representatives of the larger community should have a major role.

The Cusat syndicate decided that the existing Act will be amended in tune with the rapid changes in the field of higher education in the country and abroad.

The syndicate committee will also suggest measures that will step up the quality of research and learning on the campus.
