The Haritha Keralam project aims at planting one crore tree saplings across the State.

Twenty-one different varieties of tree saplings, including avenue trees and decorative trees, are being distributed under the scheme. The local self-government bodies concerned were responsible for the conservation of tree saplings to be planted in public places within their limits. Mr. Nair said that the funds available under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme could also be utilised for conservation of tree saplings.

The project aims at a green drive propelled by people’s participation. Committees had been formed at the panchayat and ward levels for this purpose.

The Haritha Keralam project will be implemented fully within two years. Local self-government bodies are expected to undertake works under the project on their own next year. Members of Kudumbasree had been given training in planting of saplings and their conservation. For more details regarding distribution of tree saplings contact: 98959-69808, 94478-23572.
