THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The two-day meeting of the CPI(M) State secretariat drew to a close here on Monday after finalising the report on the Lok Sabha elections presented by party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. The meeting is understood to have witnessed a showdown of sorts with Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan reacting sharply to what he reportedly termed an attempt by the party State leadership to place the entire blame for the ruling LDF’s election rout to his stand on various issues. The Chief Minister termed the report biased and said the LDF’s defeat had more to do with the alienation of the coalition partners, particularly the Janata Dal (Secular) and the CPI, the tie-up with the Abdul Nasir Maudany-led PDP and the public perceptions about the SNC Lavalin corruption scandal. Party general secretary Prakash Karat, who has been attending the meeting of the CPI(M) State secretariat from Sunday, is also reported to have cited the tie-up with the PDP and the alienation of allies like the JD(S) among the reasons for the setbacks suffered by the LDF. The CPI(M) State secretary had, in the report presented to the committee on Sunday, reportedly cited the Chief Minister’s stand on key issues having been at variance with the official position of the party and attributed the public apathy towards the LDF and the government to Mr. Achuthanandan’s style of functioning. The first day’s deliberations of the party secretariat had also seen a sharp attack against the Chief Minister. The report would now be placed before the three-day CPI(M) State committee meeting beginning here on Tuesday with changes as suggested by Mr. Karat.
