THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd. (Milma) has decided to institute a special prize scheme for dairy farmers and consumers as part of the commemoration of World Milk Day on June 1.

At a press conference here on Monday, Milma managing director Baby Joseph said dairy farmers from all districts who had given milk to dairy societies on May 21 could participate in the prize scheme. Two lucky farmers in each district, who would be selected by a lucky dip, would be awarded a colour television and five sacks of cattle feed.

Besides, consumers who buy Milma milk on June 1 also have a chance to win prizes. Prize coupons will be distributed along with every cover of Milma milk on June 1. Lucky winners in every district can take home a colour television and a free quota of one litre milk daily for a month.

Milma chairman Kallara Ramesh, who was present at the press conference, said the State relied on other states for 30 percent of its milk consumption. “Our State is in the process of acquiring self-reliability in milk production. At the same time, it is also important to increase our per capita consumption from the present 227 g to stop the migration of dairy farmers to other occupations,” he said.

He said it was necessary to bring more entrepreneurs to dairy farming.

Mr. Ramesh said World Milk Day was celebrated every year to bring to the forefront the problems and issues faced by dairy farmers and to acknowledge their contribution to the society.

It was an occasion to create awareness among the public of the importance of milk for a healthy diet, Mr. Ramesh added.
