Guwahati: The D.D. Lapang-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government won a trust vote on Monday by a voice vote in the Meghalaya Assembly. New SpeakerGovernor Ranjit Sekhar Mooshahary earlier gave 15 days to Dr. Lapang to prove his majority on the floor of the House after the President’s Rule was revoked and a new Congress-UDP coalition government led by Dr. Lapang was sworn in on May 13. The Opposition Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) did not press for a division. The Meghalaya Assembly on Monday also elected a new Speaker with MUA nominee Charles Pyngrope elected unopposed immediately after the trust vote. The election of the new Speaker was necessitated after incumbent Speaker Bindo M. Lanong quit the chair to join the Dr. Lapang Ministry as Deputy Chief Minister after his party United Democratic Party (UDP) decided to join the Congress-led coalition government. Corrections and ClarificationsA report "Lapang wins trust vote" (May 26, 2009) said that incumbent Bindo M. Lanong quit the chair to become the Deputy Chief Minister after his United Democractic Party (UDP) decided to join the Congress-led coalition, while another report "New coalition takes over in Meghalaya" (May 14, 2009) said Dr. Mukul Sangma was sworn in Deputy Chief Minister. The Correspondent clarifies that both reports are correct as Meghalaya has two Deputy Chief Ministers - Dr. Mukul Sangma from the Congress party and Mr. Bindo M. Lanong.
