In action: Punjab Police men fire in the air to disperse agitating mobs on the outskirts of Jalandhar on Monday. NEW DELHI: Movement of rail traffic in Punjab was hit hard on Monday with trains being torched and attacked in large-scale violence, forcing Northern Railway to take precautionary measures that added to the woes of passengers. Northern Railway cancelled several trains besides regulating and cancelling many others keeping in view the agitation across Punjab where two trains were burnt and others were stopped by people squatting on tracks. The Kanya Kumari-Jammu Tawi Express was attacked near Jalandhar where three coaches were burnt and the engine of Sonepur-Jammu Tawi Mour Dwaj Express was set ablaze in Phagwara. The mobs saw to it that the passengers and the driver vacated the trains before setting them on fire. The Jalandhar-Amritsar route was badly affected with demonstrators blocking the tracks. The agitators held up several long-distance trains at various places. These included 0403 Delhi-Jammu Special, 2926 Paschim Express, 1058 Amritsar-Dadar Express, 4038 Pathankot-Delhi Express, 6317 Kanya Kumari-Jammu Tawi Himsagar Express, 0404 Delhi-Jammu Special, 2491 Sonepur-Jammu Tawi Mour Dwaj Express, 5708 Amritsar-Katihar Express, 2331 Howrah-Jammu Tawi Himgiri Express and 2208 Kathgodam-Jammu Tawi Garib Rath. The Northern Railway has set up helplines at Ludhiana, Jalandhar City, Jalandhar Cantt, Amritsar, Pathankot, Ferozepur and Jammu Tawi.
