Ration dealers not poor: Minister

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The office of Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran has refuted the claim that all ration dealers are living below the poverty line.

An official release from the office said the ration dealers were getting commissions ranging from Rs.18 to Rs.21 a quintal. Besides, the government had announced an increase in commissions totalling Rs.15 (Rs.6 for the wholesale dealer and Rs.9 for the retailer). The government had converted 1,700 ration shops into Sabari stores. Those dealers received commissions for selling items supplied by the State Civil Supplies Corporation.

The government had formed a welfare fund to address the problems of the ration dealers. Benefits, including pensions, were being provided from the fund. The government had also submitted a Rs.52-crore project to the Centre for modernisation of the ration shops.

Refuting the claim of the dealers that they were in dire straits, the release said no shop had closed for want of revenues. Shops had been closed only by the government over irregularities.
