Drugs worth a crore seized; couple held

NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old woman and her husband have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly indulging in illegal export of psychotropic substances to Afghanistan.

The police mounted a raid at the Sangam Vihar residence of the couple on Friday and seized 200 kg of Phenobarbital and 300 kg of Acetic Anhydride. The haul is valued at Rs.1 crore in the international market.

The accused, later identified as Rabia Begum and Kalim Akhtar, were arrested during the raid.

During interrogation, Rabia purportedly told the police that an Afgani Sikh lured her into the illegal trade a few years ago. The consignment was sent to Afghanistan wrapped in bundles of garments via air and was received by the Afghani Sikh. A cargo agent was also hand in glove with them. The police said Rabia lured her 50-year-old husband, a cooler mechanic, into the illegal trade.
