Surendra accounted for India’s lone gold India made a clean sweep in the 3,000m
Surendra Singh. Suzhou (China): Surendra Kumar Singh accounted for India’s solitary gold medal in the opening leg of the Asian Grand Prix athletics meet here on Saturday. Surendra, national record holder in the event (7:50.31), won the 3,000 metres untroubled in 7:59.52, with teammates Ravinder Sharma Bharadwaj (7:59.81) and Sandip Kumar (8:00.15) making it a clean sweep of the medals for India. In fact, five of the eight runners in the field were Indians, making it look like an Indian Grand Prix meet rather than an Asian Grand Prix one. Kashinath Aswale (8:03.21, fourth) and Elam Singh (8:10.99, sixth) were the other Indians. Other winnersOther Indian medal winners were Bibin Mathew (silver) and Shake Mortaja (bronze) in the men’s 400 metres, Om Prakash Singh (silver) and Saurabh Vij (bronze) in men’s shot put and Krishna Poonia (silver) and Seema Antil (bronze) in women’s discus. Abdul Najeeb Qureshi took the first place in the men’s 100 metres ‘B’ race, while H. M. Jyothi was second in the women’s 100 metres ‘B’ race. The Indian men’s 4x400m team also took the first position in a two-team race, with a local Chinese combination providing the only challenge. It clocked 3:10.60.
