Congress may dump CPI from Manipur coalition

Iboyaima Laithangbam

IMPHAL: The seven-year-old coalition in Manipur is likely to end as State Congress leaders have sought an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party president Sonia Gandhi to demand a parting of ways with the Communist Party of India.

The Congress leaders will demand the sacking of Cabinet Minister Pheiroijam Parijat and other CPI MLAs, who are holding posts of the rank and status of Minister of State.

All three MPs from the State, including the two elected in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, PCC president Gaikhangam and other senior leaders, two important Ministers and eight MLAs are in New Delhi.

The leaders told The Hindu on Friday that election results both at the Centre and in Manipur were so encouraging to the Congress that there was no need for it to keep company with the CPI. Furthermore, the CPI was behaving like an opposition party for its political ends. When its plea for more Cabinet berths was not entertained, the CPI rank and file went to the press demanding that the party withdraw from the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) Ministry, the Congress said.

Recently, the CPI charged the Congress with resorting to massive rigging in the Lok Sabha elections.
