Plantations to get global certification

P.Oppili

CHENNAI: If things go as per plan, the Forest Department’s canal bank plantations in Thanjavur, the Tamil Nadu Forest Plantation Corporation’s plantations in Tiruchi and Pudukottai and the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) in Tirunelveli will get international certification.

While the plantations will get the quality certification for teak and other produces extracted from these areas, the KMTR will get a certificate for best conservation management efforts.

C.K.Sreedharan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of the Forest Force, Tamil Nadu, said right now the products from the department such as teak from Thanjavur or materials made of sandalwood were in great demand. For export, certification would be of great help.
