Facility, hitherto available in Hyderabad and other cities, extended to Tirupati ‘Transactions which took 4-5 days will now be completed in less than half an hour’
Top gear: Temporary Registration Certificate and tax receipt printed at an automobile showroom in Tirupati to be delivered to a customer on the spot. TIRUPATI: Gone are the days when one has to rush from pillar to post in the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to pay the life tax and other charges to get a Temporary Registration certificate on purchasing a vehicle. Thanks to the Transport Department’s novel initiative, one can get them while taking the delivery of the vehicle, be it a two-wheeler, four-wheeler or even a cargo carrier. The facility, hitherto available in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, has been extended to Tirupati on Monday. The automobile dealer has to simply enter the login id and password provided by the department to gain access to the network. After verifying the customer’s credentials and entering the vehicle details like chassis/engine number, the Temporary Registration Certificate is generated. Similarly, the transport department deducts the life tax payable for the vehicle from the automobile dealer’s online bank account, following which the tax receipt is also issued online. “The set of transactions which used to take four to five days earlier will now be completed in less than half an hour,” Regional Transport Officer Ram Prasad told The Hindu. Normally, the amount has to be paid across the counter in the eSeva centres. The customers and the dealers faced untold hardship when the eSeva centres went on strike last year, forcing the department to work towards an alternative channel. The Transport department is also contemplating to make issue and renewal of driving licence online.
