Congress sweep in Haryana
Rajesh Ahuja
CHANDIGARH: The Congress on Saturday virtually made a clean sweep in Haryana by winning nine out of 10 Lok Sabha seats while the former Chief Minister and Haryana Janhit Congress founder Bhajan Lal won the prestigious Hisar seat by only a margin of over 6,983 votes.
The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and its alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were virtually routed.
About 69 per cent of 1.20 crore voters cast their votes on May 7. A total of 210 candidates, including 14 women, were in the fray.
It may be recalled that the BJP, which managed to win the Sonipat seat in the 2004 polls, could not retain the seat. Sonepat MP Kishan Singh Sangwan lost to Jitender Singh Malik, a protégé of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, by a record margin of 1,61,284 votes. The alliance had contested five seats each but failed to open an account.
Mr. Bhajan Lal wrested the Hisar seat from the Congress by defeating his nearest rival Sampat Singh (INLD) and Congress MP Jai Prakash, who emerged third.
The most spectacular result was that of Deepender Singh Hooda, MP from Rohtak and son of Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who retained the seat by a record margin of 4,45,736 votes.
