Sudirman Cup: Indians begin well

HYDERABAD: India began its campaign in the Sudirman Cup world team badminton championship with a 4-1 win over Australia at Guangzhou, China, on Monday.

Two-time National champion Chetan Anand defeated Jeff Tho 21-14, 21-14, while World No. 10 Saina Nehwal defeated Leisha Cooper 21-11, 21-5.

The mixed doubles pair of V. Diju and Jwala Gutta then registered a 21-19, 21-15 win over Benjamin Walkate and Kate Wilson Smith.

The Indian men’s doubles combination of Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar also won in straight games, beating Glenn Warfe and Benjamin McCarthy 21-12, 21-15.

However, Shruti Kurien and Aparna Balan, combining for the first time in an international event, lost to Engenia Tanake and Kate Wilson Smith 21-16, 19-21, 18-21 in women’s doubles.

India takes on Ukraine on Tuesday.
