Vijender excited to be back in the ring

Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI: Olympic bronze medal winning boxer Vijender Singh will be back in action soon.

After his historic feat in Beijing last year, the middleweight boxer will participate in the 40th European Grand Prix, to be held in Usti Nad Labem of Czech Republic from May 13 to 17.

Despite the long layoff, Vijender is confident of putting up a good show in the tournament.

“After a long break I am excited to be back in the ring. I have been practising all these months to better my skills and am confident of doing well.

“In fact, the Grand Prix will be the beginning of my new journey to sharpen my skills for the upcoming championships that I will be participating this year,” Vijender said.

Main focus

The 23-year-old said he was aiming to do well in the forthcoming World championship to be held in Italy in August.

“World championship is my main focus as I would like to bring another medal for my country at the highest level,” he said.

Besides Vijender, other Indian boxers to take part in the European Grand Prix are Suranjoy Singh (51kg), P. Narjeet Singh (54kg), Jai Bhagwan (60kg) and Manoj Kumar (64kg).

Preliminary bouts of the tournament will start on May 13 and the finals will be held on May 16.

The first and second place winners will get prize money.
