CHANDIGARH: Renowned Left leader and a former Punjab MLA, Vimla Dang, died on Sunday in Amritsar after a prolonged illness. She was 83 and is survived by her husband, Satyapal Dang, a living legend in the Communist movement in this part of the country. The mortal remains of the departed leader were cremated with full State honours in the presence of a large number of citizens and local dignitaries Role modelBorn on December 26, 1926, Ms. Dang had been a role model in Punjab since she joined the progressive movement at an early age as an activist of the Lahore Students’ Union. A Punjabi of Kashmiri descent, she worked as Correspondent with different publications. After her marriage in 1952, she had been living with her husband in Chheharta town of Amritsar, where she worked among women. Padma awardeeIn recognition for her social work, she was bestowed the Padma Shri in 1991. Despite her advanced age, Ms. Dang remained active with the Punjab Istri Sabha Relief Trust and the Aruna Asaf Ali Trust to help disadvantaged sections of society.
