Coimbatore: Surinder Singh of Services carried on with his good form by clinching the men’s 5000m gold in the second leg of the Park Institutions Indian Grand Prix athletics championship at the floodlit Nehru Stadium here on Friday night. Surinder, the Kochi leg winner, appeared to be his usual earnest and absorbed self at the start. The smooth-paced runner, who used his long strides when in high gear, closed his account with a striking 13:49.60s effort. It turned out to be his second best in Indian soil. He had clocked 13:46.47s in the Indian GPs season’s opener at Patiala last year. In the women’s section, ONGC’s Kavita Raut surprised Railway’s Preeja Sreedharan for the gold.
