Plea to revive Parvathy Puthanar

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Proliferation of water weeds in the Parvathy Puthanar canal and sewage contamination of the water is threatening the livelihood of fishworkers in the Poonthura, Veli, Kadhinamkulam and Murukkumpuzha areas in the district.

The Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation has called for government intervention to find a permanent solution to the problem. A press note quoting federation president T. Peter and district secretary Anto Elias said the water weeds were choking aquatic life in the canal and the lakes. “Hundreds of inland fishworkers and their families are on the verge of starvation. Women vendors who sell the fish have also found their livelihood threatened.”

The federation said pollution and water weeds had made the Veli-Akkulam lake unfit for tourism.

The federation will take out a rally and stage a dharna in front of the office of the Accountant-General on Monday in protest against the exclusion of fishworkers in the State from the agricultural loan waiver scheme announced by the Union government.
