TIRUCHI: The four-day summer camp organised by the Anna Science Centre – Planetarium provided a good opportunity to school students to understand various science subjects. The highlight of the programme was the special sessions to improve the memory power of the students. A large number of students of classes VII – IX from schools in Tiruchi and the neighbouring districts participated in the camp. Experts offered tips with interesting demonstrations in a non-formal way on subjects like Astronomy, General Science and Mathematics. Sessions on yoga, origami, science and magic, science demonstration, sky observation provided added attraction. The camp commenced with a programme on ‘basic Astronomy’ and ‘calendars’ by Rubanraj of the Department of Mathematics of St. Joseph’s College. S. Jayapaul, Scientific Assistant of the Science Centre, R. Ahilan, Planetarium Engineer, enthralled the participants during the sessions on ‘observational Astronomy’ and ‘ancient Astronomy’ respectively. The youngsters were also taught on sky observation by J. R. Pazhaniswami, Senior Scientific Assistant for an hour in the late evening. The second day’s sessions were earmarked for improving memory techniques. John Louis, Memory Grand Master and International Memory Trainer, explained the basic principles of memory, how to integrate the memory techniques in learning school subjects. He imparted training on the memory techniques which would enable them to understand the subjects and make learning funny and enjoyable one. By adopting these techniques, Mr. Louis said the youngsters could remember their lessons much better for a longer period. Link system and substituting word system would enable them to receive the information properly and promptly, journey system would pave way for recording information received in the brain. Scientific periodic revision would help to retain the information received as long as one wished. He extensively used animation techniques to drive his point home. T. R. Jothilingam, a Maths expert, handled the session on ‘joy of learning Mathematics’, when he explained easy solutions for solving many serious Mathematical problems. His another session on ‘Mathematical games’ created a lot of interest among the youngsters. The third day’s programme was full of demonstrations using day to day maths to make the students realise and appreciate what is happening around the world. T.M. Alagiriswami Raju, Project Director (in-charge) of the Science Centre, delivered a lecture on ‘Science and Society’. T. R. Gowthaman, Yoga Master, imparted training on yoga to keep the body and mind fit. Natarajan, a well know Science communicator, handled the session on ‘origami’ when he taught the students on making simple scientific models and handicrafts using paper. The camp concluded with a ‘Science and magic’ programme by Natarajan and Sabari. The participants had a special planetarium show at the end. The summer camp evoked good response and the Centre has planned to organise similar camps at regular intervals, said Mr. Alagiriswami Raju.
