SPIRITUAL FERVOUR: Devotees engaged in “theerthavari” on Lord Sundararajaperumal as part of the Chithirai festival at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district on Saturday. (Bottom) Lord Sri Soundaraja Perumal (Kallazhagar) entering the Kudaganar river at Thadikombu near Dindigul. RAMANATHAPURAM: Lord Sundararajaperumal, (Kallazhagar), entered the river Vaigai at Paramakudi on Saturday near here amidst chanting of Vedic hymns and slogans of ‘Govinda, Govinda’. Though the event was arranged during the early hours, a large number of devotees from Parmakudi, Ramanathapuram and the nearby areas thronged the riverbanks to witness the holy event. The Lord was brought to the venue in “poopallakku”. This is an important event of the nine day annual Chithirai festival and this is the third day event after the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar. The venue, which was in the middle of the Vaigai, was lit with powerful electrical lights and tubes. The devotees, who thronged from far away areas, made a beeline to get the holy water sprinkled on them. Later, a large number of devotees attended the “theerthavari” on the Lord Kallazhagar at Melachathiram. The police made elaborate arrangements to control the crowd.
