Vijaynagar retains title

BANGALORE: Vijayanagar (Hospet), despite losing its last semifinal league match to Mangalore Basketball Club, retained the State sub-junior basketball championship here on Friday.

Needing to win by at least 10 points for a top finish, Mangalore BC managed only a 35-32 margin win to finish runner-up. Meanwhile in the girls’ section, Mounts Club won the three-way tie for the title. Needing a big win to enhance its quotient, Mounts crushed Sports School, Mandya 32-13.

The results (semifinal league): Boys: Vivekananda, Mandya 33 (Vinay 17, Prem 6) bt Jayanagar Sports Club 13 (Sachin 6); Mangalore BC 35 (Ruthwik 22, Vishal 6) bt Vijayanagar (Hospet) 32 (Asif 15).

Girls: Naveen Shetty, Mangalore 38 (Pallavi Rao 14, Sharanya 12) bt JSC 10 (Kamala 5); Mounts Club 32 (Lopa 11, Anadhya 8) bt Sports School 13.

Final position: Boys: 1. Vijayanagar, Hospet; 2. Mangalore BC, 3. Vivekananda, Mandya, 4. JSC. Girls: Mounts Club, 2. Naveen Shetty, Mangalore; 3. SS Mandya, 4. JSC.
