Code violation complaint still pending before CEO

Only five days are left for commencement of elections

11 teachers gave advertisement in a daily welcoming M.K. Azhagiri

“Repeated attempts to contact Chief Electoral Officer failed”

TIRUNELVELI: Even as only five days are left for the commencement of the fifth and last phase of the 15th Parliamentary elections, a complaint against poll code violation involving a group of 11 teachers is still pending before Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta for appropriate action.

When DMK south zone organising secretary M.K. Azhagiri came to Tirunelveli on March 22 to address a meeting, the 11 teachers, with their passport size photographs, had given advertisement in a Tamil daily on behalf of their association, welcoming and hailing Mr. Azhagiri as the election model code of conduct had come into effect.

Raising this issue immediately in one of the all-party meetings chaired by District Collector and Returning Officer of Tirunelveli Lok Sabha seat, R. Palaniyandi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Tirunelveli City district secretary K.M.A. Nizam, who showed the controversial advertisement to the Collector and the participants of the meeting, said the ad given by the teachers was “total violation of election code of conduct” and hence these teachers should not be involved in any of the election duty as they would not be impartial while discharging the poll duty.

“Moreover, appropriate and stringent action should be taken against the erring teachers,” Mr. Nizam appealed.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and the Left Parties also endorsed the views of Mr. Nizam.

The Collector assured him that appropriate action would be taken.

“Though the Collector forwarded the advertisement and my complaint to Mr. Gupta long back, we are yet to receive any reply from him and no action has been taken against the teachers,” said Mr. Nizam, adding that his repeated attempts to contact Mr. Gupta failed.
