Thiruvananthapuram: The State secretariat of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has alleged that the United Democratic Front is exerting pressure on constitutional institutions in an unconstitutional and anti-democratic way over the SNC Lavalin issue. In a statement here on Friday, the secretariat said those who had respect for democracy and the rule of law should protest against the Opposition front’s move. It contended that the political pressure tactics being adopted repeatedly by the UDF were aimed at making the Governor approve its stand. The dharna held in front of the Secretariat earlier, Thursday’s hartal and the audience with the Governor on Friday were all part of a hidden political conspiracy. Though it openly conceded the Governor’s authority to take an independent stand, its interventions made it difficult for him to do so. The Governor’s was an office which the Constitution considered capable of examining the issue legally and taking a decision. Through its interventions, the Opposition was expressing a lack of confidence in the Governor’s capability. The Opposition seemed to be worked up by the way of law along which the constitutional institutions were moving. It was trying to scuttle politically the stand which should be adopted on the basis of law.
