Encounter specialist Sharma reinstated

MUMBAI: Controversial encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, who was dismissed by Mumbai police for his alleged links with underworld gangs, was on Thursday ordered reinstated by the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT), which held that his removal was unsustainable under law.

Inspector Sharma (48), who has killed 112 criminals in 25 years of service, was dismissed by the government on August 31 last for his alleged links with the crime syndicate.

Mr. Sharma was accused of corruption and amassing wealth to the tune of Rs. 3,000 crore.

He was suspected to have ties with gangs led by Chotta Rajan and Dawood Ibrahim. Mr. Sharma has denied the allegations.

“The tribunal also ordered payment of back wages for the period since his dismissal,” Mr. Sharma’s lawyer Sandeep Mutalik told PTI. — PTI
