KOLKATA: Jayanta Talukdar moved into the final of the men’s recurve individual event in the archery World Cup-Stage II at Porec, Croatia, on Thursday. Standing between him and glory is the 2004 Athens Olympic champion Marco Galiazzo of Italy. The 23-year-old Guwahati-born Talukdar shot consistently to win five rounds in a row before reaching the final. Currently ranked 16th by the FITA and seeded second in this meet, Talukdar beat Jean-Charles Valladont of France 112-111 in the semifinals and 10th ranked Russian Baljinima Tsyrempilov 112-110 in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Talukdar had eliminated Chinese Yu Zing (113-111) in the third round and Hai Feng Xue (112-111) in the second after beginning with a fluent 113-105 victory over Luis Felipe Paulinyi of Brazil. India’s campaign in the women’s section was nothing short of disaster. Only Chekrovolu Swuro made it to the pre-quarterfinals where she lost 105-104 to Sophie Dodemont of France. L. Bombayla Devi, Rimil Buriuly and Dola Banerjee fell in the second round. Namita Yadav and Chinna Raju Srither stood out in what looked like a total washout in the compound bow section. Men’s National champion Srither lost to Dietmar Trillus of Canada in the pre-quarterfinals at 112-114, while Namita fell to second seed Ivana Buden of Croatia in the tiebreaker. She lost 114 (9)-114 (10) in the quarterfinals. – Special Correspondent
