Letters to the Editor
The details revealed by Vrinda Sharma — that one out of every 10 candidates contesting in Haryana has a criminal background (May 7) — are shocking. It indicates the extent of moral deterioration in politics. It is a pity that the Indian National Lok Dal and the Congress could not avoid such elements. The mix of this large number of criminal and crorepati candidates, together with a fair number of school dropouts, will corrupt the political atmosphere in Haryana totally. Earlier, leaders came to politics for doing service and they had something to sacrifice. Now, fortune seekers and opportunists compete for coming to politics, seeing it as a means to gain authority and power. K.C. Joseph, Thiruvananthapuram Not even two days have passed since you wrote an editorial, when sarees meant for distribution by DMK cadres were seized by EC observers in Madurai, where the Chief Minister’s son himself is a candidate. The action taken is timely. The EC should take away the right to cast vote if a voter is seen receiving such benefits. S.P. Kumar, Chennai
