Additional Observer to keep watch on candidates’ expenses

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission has said that the additional observer deputed by it to Madurai Lok Sabha constituency, Madangopal, had been specifically briefed to monitor the election expenditure of the contestants.

This was in view of complaints of bribing of voters, distribution of freebies and other incidents of model code violations involving money being received by the Commission, said a top official.

The additional observer, who was selected going by his experience in poll-related works, would coordinate with the other three observers and send inputs to the Commission.

Fall out

“We are keenly monitoring the situation in the constituency.” The appointment of a new Police Commissioner was a fall out of this, he added.
