BANGALORE: Mangalore Basketball Club clinched a thriller at 31-29 against Young Orions in the boys’ quarterfinals of the sub-junior (under-13) State basketball tournament at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts, here on Wednesday. After enjoying an 8-4 lead, Mangalore BC ended the second quarter with a one-point deficit at 11-12. But with superb basketing by Ruthvik and Yash Rai the Mangalore side finished the third quarter at 24-16. Young Orions, however, gave nothing away and the scores were tied 29-all in the deciding quarter before Ruthvik found the all-important basket and hung onto it for a thrilling victory and a berth in the semifinal league. Earlier, reigning champion Vijaynagara, Hospet, scored a comfortable 40-27 victory over Beagles to book its semifinal berth. The Hospet boys rode on Puneeth’s speed and excellent lay-ups. Puneeth ended up top-scoring with 22 points.
