64 Taliban militants killed

Islamabad: The Pakistan Army on Wednesday widened its crackdown on the Taliban and launched attacks with helicopter gunships and tanks to wrest control of the restive Swat valley, killing 64 extremists. Thousands of people fled the region’s main town, Mingora, following an upsurge in the violence.

Thirty-five Taliban fighters were killed as the troops engaged the militants in street fighting in Mingora and took control of Emerald Mines, which the Taliban was exploiting to enrich its coffers. — PTI
